First of all, happy New Year to all of you. Think back on the year 2017. What kind of year was that for you? Now think about the New Year 2018 that is before you. How will you engage this New Year? I believe that based on our experiences in 2017, each of us should be embracing one of the three following strategies for 2018:
(1) Keep doing what you have been doing, but do it better. For some of you, 2017 has been an amazing year. But every road to success is paved with some failures or disappointments. If we take heed, our failures can be among our greatest teachers. What have your 2017 successes—and failures–taught you that can make you even more effective in reaching your goals for 2018? The extent to which you embrace those lessons will determine how much more effective you can be this New Year.
(2) Make some drastic changes to your past strategy for the New Year. One of our practical definitions of insanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results. Sad but true, that in effect will be some people’s strategy for the New Year. Life is too short to waste our time. We should take an objective look at what we have been doing in the past to see if we are on the right track for the future.
Now let’s be careful about this one. We know success does not come overnight. Some things we do can take several years to yield the rewards. For those activities, it may not be realistic to merely look at the results of 2017 to judge things. But even when that is the case, there are metrics that can be used to tell us whether or not we are trending toward success. Based on input from that assessment, for some of you, some serious course corrections may be in order for 2018.
(3) Get moving! Some time ago I saw the following words on a church’s marquee: “Life is to be lived, not just passed through.” Some people are not living the life God has blessed them with; they are just passing through life. Are you the person I am speaking to? If you are, don’t allow this New Year to pass you by. Stop dreaming about what you want out of life. Stop whining about the challenges that lie ahead. Get moving. Put your dreams and faith in action. Don’t wait for success to find you. Almost nothing worthwhile will come to you without a price.
I wish for all of you a blessed and prosperous New Year. Remember that you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. Take an objective look at 2017. Adopt a strategy for the New Year. Give it all you’ve got. And have faith in God.
