A similar analogy can be made about our spiritual status. A sign of spiritual health is that we have a good appetite for spiritual food and spiritual things. These include prayer, Bible study, preaching, and serving the Lord. A Christian that lacks a good appetite for spiritual food and spiritual things is not a healthy Christian.
“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled,” Jesus said during one of His sermons (Matthew 5:6). All Christians already have the gift of righteousness through faith in Christ. It is this righteousness that puts us in right standing with God.
But we are also called to walk in righteousness in our daily lives. We accomplish this objective by walking in obedience to the Word of God. Walking in righteousness is the means by which our lives bring glory to the Lord. Jesus says those who hunger and thirst after righteousness are blessed. He promises that they shall be filled.
God wants to fill our lives with righteousness. But this blessing is not incidental to being a Christian. It is reserved for those who hunger and thirst after righteousness.
Do you hunger and thirst for righteousness?
