When we speak, we convey more than the words that leave our mouth. Our words give others a window into our heart. In his epistle James writes, “If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well” (James 3:2). Based on those words, the person who always puts his foot in his mouth lacks control of his entire body.
Even some of the most prominent people in our world have failed to master the tongue. One irresponsible comment or public remark can dog you for a lifetime. Envious careers have been destroyed by men and women who couldn’t control their tongue.
Moreover, our tongue is a reflection of our heart. For it is out of the abundance of our heart that our mouth speaks (see Matt. 12:34). Hence, the more we grow spiritually, the less we will speak unwisely.
Through our words, we can bless others or we can curse them. We can minister life to others or we can minister death. The way we utilize our tongue is a reflection of our maturity in Christ or the lack thereof. So what does your tongue say about you?
