To the question posed by the title of this post, you may be thinking well, yeah, my spouse and I are Christians. But just because the two of you are Christians does not mean God is an active partner in your marriage. He may be only a passive partner. In order for God to be an active partner in your marriage, you must allow Him to do so. It’s not His style to force Himself upon us.
Regardless of the relationship between a parent and a child, the parent will always be the parent. If the child shuts the parent out of his or her life, however, the parent can’t play an active role in the child’s life. The problem with such a relationship between the parent and the child is that the child can’t benefit from the parent’s bank of knowledge and experience.
I believe some Christian couples have a similar relationship with God, with respect to their marriage. They have chosen to not allow Him to be actively involved in their marriage. They don’t allow His Word, recorded in the Scriptures, to govern their marriage or personal life. In turn, they don’t get the benefit of God’s counsel and help.
One thing true about every marriage is that neither partner is literally perfect. Each person is still growing in his or her personal relationship with God. Some marriage partners have a long ways to go in this area. And each marriage partner’s individual relationship with God bears significantly on the quality of marriage the couple can experience.
Moreover, it is not uncommon for a marriage to have challenges or rocky seasons at times. A couple can have a picture perfect wedding one day, and two years later file for divorce. But a failed marriage does not happen overnight. The question is, how much authority do we allow the Word of God and prayer to have in our personal relationship with Him and in our marriage during difficult times? The answer to that question says a lot about whether or not God is an active partner in our marriage.
So is He an active partner in your marriage? When He challenges you through His Word or through the Holy Spirit about a problem area in your marriage or personal life, do you respond appropriately?
We need God to be an active partner in our marriage. That’s if we want to have the best marriage possible, and if we want to maximize our chances of a lasting marriage. God knows more about marriage than anybody else does. Marriage was exclusively His idea. God wrote the book on marriage. He has the best answer for every marital challenge. He causes us to triumph in all things. That makes Him the best marriage partner we can have.
