Jesus taught us a lot about the power of prayer. The devil also knows that prayer is powerful. That’s why he fights us so much in that area. Accordingly, there are forces that you and I can’t see that oppose our efforts to pray and to receive from God.
This has nothing to do with whether you are a babe in Christ or you are mature in Christ. No matter where you are in your Christian journey, whether you realize it or not, prayer invites spiritual opposition.
Daniel writes of a time when he encountered spiritual opposition to prayer. He had seen a troubling vision. He sought God for understanding. The vision was so troubling that he prayed, mourned, and fasted for 21 days. Then an angel visited him from heaven with the answer to his prayer.
But hear what the angel said to Daniel: “From the first day that you did set your heart to understand, and to chasten yourself before your God, your words were heard…” (Daniel 10:12)! So Daniel prayed one day, and he received the answer to his prayer 21 days later. Sounds familiar? The point is that, oftentimes, duration of time exists between when we pray and when we receive from God.
The angel explained to Daniel what caused the delay. “The prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days…” (verse 13). This was the spiritual opposition Daniel experienced during his quest for an answer from God. The angel said the archangel Michael had to help him break through.
Let’s think about how significant the angel’s words are. Daniel prays. God sends an angel with the answer. And the angel tells Daniel what caused the delay. Well, the angel should know. He was the one involved in the process. So we are getting this revelation from the angel himself. This is not about what we think was the problem. The angel tells us what the problem was.
The word prince in verse 13 comes from a word that refers to a chief or a head person of any class or rank. What we are talking about is a spiritual entity with a leader or head; in other words, organized forces. When we pray, this is the spiritual opposition we are up against.
The important point to remember is that the angel told Daniel his prayer was heard in heaven on day one. The same is true about us. God hears us when we pray. The enemy will fight the process. But God not only promises to hear us when we pray but also to answer. All the demons in the world can’t nullify what God has promised.
