Want to be a Winner in Life? Find a Winner in Life

A winner holding up a trophyWant to be a winner in life? Then find a winner in life and emulate his ways. The Bible calls on us to become “followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises” (Hebrews 6:12).  This verse refers to believers who know how to stand in faith and patience until they realize a promise from God. A message to take from this verse is that an important ingredient to becoming a winner is to emulate the ways of a winner.

God’s will for each of us is to become the best version of the person He has called us to be. To reach such a goal, it behooves us to feed off those who have grown spiritually to where we want to be. I know that during my walk with God, I have been greatly encouraged by others who have modeled how to endure adversities and subsequently experience the blessedness of remaining faithful until the end.

Success seldom comes easily. The opposition or obstacles to our goals can seem daunting at times. We may even feel tempted to talk ourselves out of paying the necessary costs for success. During such times of inner struggle, the people whom we allow to feed our minds can make the difference between our moving forward and resolving to stay where we are.

It’s hard if not impossible to excel in life if we lack discretion in the area of the company we keep. When my children were young, they did not agree with me on this point. My wife and I have six children. All of them had friends coming around to play with and spend time with them. My wife and I were constantly monitoring who came around. We were trying to groom our children to keep their head on straight. And we understood the power of bad influence.

Of course, our children tried to convince us that we didn’t have to worry about them getting off course. They argued that they knew right from wrong because we had so taught them. But we were not buying their naïve perspective.

Similarly, we must not be naïve about our walk with the Lord. Winners in Christ can beget other winners in Christ. The people we connect with in life can be an asset or a liability to our becoming the champion in the faith God is calling us to be. If you want to become a winner in life for Christ, find a fellow believer who models such a life. And allow his or her life to speak to yours. Maybe the person is too far away to reach out and touch. Alternatives include the person’s books, blog posts, podcast, etc.

  1. Absolutely! I am still indebted to the elderly woman who mentored me as a new Christian. I not only listened to her godly wisdom but I watched her life. I learned that not all who profess to be Christians give godly advice…but she did.

    • Thanks, Kathleen. One of those winners in my life that I remember was my wife’s pastor when I first started in the ministry. He was old enough to be my dad. He loved pouring into me as a young minister. He shared things with me about the ministry up front that were priceless as I went forward trying to learn how to do what God had called me to do.
